Cancer Research UK & Flamenco with Maika!
Some months ago, a film crew from @cr_uk Cancer Research UK came to record one of my flamenco classes in London at @danceworkslondon Danceworks… and now the advert is on TV as part of the Race for Life campaign. 💖
This year’s campaign message is “All In”, a powerful reminder that beating cancer takes all of us coming together.🙌🏻
My wonderful students and I had the honour of contributing to this campaign through dance. Flamenco is about emotion, strength, and community, and it was very special to see that energy captured on camera.❤️🔥
Seeing my students dancing with such passion while supporting such an important cause makes me incredibly proud.🤩
If you see the advert on TV or online, you might recognise some familiar flamenco moves! 💃🕺🏻
Let’s all be All In to support the incredible work Cancer Research UK does to fund life-saving research.
About Maika
Maika Jiménez Blanco is a flamenco and Spanish dance teacher whose work is dedicated to sharing the richness, strength and expressive power of this art form with students of all ages. She has been teaching internationally since 2006.
Born in Madrid, Maika began her dance journey at the age of nine, studying classical ballet and Spanish dance. She later trained at the prestigious Karen Taft Academy, the Conservatory of Dance in Madrid, and the renowned “Amor de Dios” Flamenco Centre, where she developed a deep artistic foundation in Spanish dance and flamenco.
Shortly after completing her studies at the Conservatory, a serious accident broke her back and abruptly ended her professional performing career. During a long period of rehabilitation, she redirected her path towards a career in finance. Yet her connection to dance remained strong. Encouraged by her teacher Isabel Quintero, Maika completed her qualification in Teaching Methodology Applied to Spanish Dance in 2006, marking the beginning of a new chapter devoted to teaching.
Since then, she has built an international career inspiring students across Spain, the United States, Mexico, Canada and the United Kingdom to experience the vibrant world of flamenco. From 2013 to 2018, she taught at Rey Juan Carlos University in Madrid, contributing to the academic development of Spanish dance education.
In 2008, Maika founded Spanish Flamenco Tour in Miami, a cultural initiative that designed journeys to Spain centred on flamenco and Spanish culture. Through these experiences she connected international audiences with the traditions, music and heritage of flamenco in its place of origin.
Committed to maintaining a strong connection with the roots of flamenco, Maika travels to Spain every year to attend professional training courses, including programmes at the renowned Amor de Dios Flamenco Centre in Madrid and in Jerez de la Frontera, continuing to refine her artistry and bring new knowledge and inspiration to her students.
Now based in London, Maika is the founder of Flamenco with Maika, through which she teaches weekly classes for adults and children and delivers workshops in schools and community settings. Her teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that flamenco should be accessible, empowering and joyful for everyone.
Maika holds a Master’s Degree in Leadership and Management of Cultural Projects from the Institute of Dance “Alicia Alonso” at Rey Juan Carlos University, graduating with First-Class Honours. She holds an enhanced DBS certificate, is trained in Safeguarding and First Aid, and is fully insured.
Through her teaching, Maika continues to honour the tradition of flamenco while opening its doors to new generations of dancers and enthusiasts, guided by her belief that flamenco is for everyone.
In this podcast, Maika Jiménez Blanco reflects on her journey of turning her passions for flamenco and finance into a purpose-driven project and building her own dance school in London.
